Twenty-Three

Pig and a Poke

“Hi,” Lance replied as his face warmed.

“Aww, he’s blushing!” Justin jested while nudging the first lieutenant.

“Shut up!” Lance whispered as he looked down at his friend.

He turned his attention back to Amber and approached her. His heart slammed in his chest like a hammer. It took every ounce of will he had to keep his breathing steady. As endorphins rushed over him, the young man stopped a handful of steps away.

“You look… good,” he managed to force himself to say.

Her very presence nearly stunned him to silence. Amber looked him up and down before placing her hand on his shoulder. Despite having a bodysuit between them, her touch sent chills cascading over his body. How he longed to feel the warmth of that hand on his own again.

“And you look tired,” she replied, her voice just as sweet and caring as he remembered.

“Now, where is this flawless specimen of physical perfection you keep going on about?” a semi-squeaky voice rang out.

Amber’s arm dropped to her side. Even with her darker skin, Lance noticed her cheeks flush. A shorter man in his early sixties with a slight hunch to him emerged from an inner chamber. He held a tablet as well that projected the Galio scan taken of the first lieutenant.

Stopping, he peered over the rims of thick, round glasses, a piece of equipment Lance had only seen one, maybe two other people wear in his life. A wide smile spread across the doctor’s thin lips as the first lieutenant felt Jacob Cecil’s gaze look him over.

“Oooo, a Bright Eyes too!” the doctor exclaimed before approaching Amber. “To be un-engineered and yet of such good stock is a rarity. I hope you don’t mind if I study your genetic coding outside of the LRP5 gene that we’re here to collect.”

“Doctor!” Amber scolded before turning her attention back to Lance. “I apologize. Doctor Cecil has a brilliant medical mind; he can just get a little excited at times.”

“Well?” the doctor asked impatiently. “Get out of that filthy armor, into a medical gown, and hop up on the table in the next room!”

Lance glanced at Amber. She shook her head, closed her eyes, and face-palmed herself.

“Again, I’m very sorry,” she muttered. “The operating room is through the inner door to the right. There’s a medical gown you can put on, on the bed, but please keep your armor on the table outside. You guys might have been sterilized, but I’d rather not take any chances. You can call us in when you’re ready.”

“I promise I won’t peek!” Justin said, raising his right hand.

“See, now I think you will!” Lance replied as he made his way to the door Doctor Cecil entered through.

As he passed through, the first lieutenant looked around. Concern swelled within him. One room held a cadaver, halfway through an autopsy. Another sported some of the most realistic injuries that can occur on the battlefield via simulated flesh.

At the end of their private facility was a data bank.
